About

Ben Stamper is an award-winning filmmaker and artist based in the northeastern United States. His work spans narrative, documentary and contemplative genres with a particular interest in the patterns of nature and human movement. With a background in fine art and music, Ben’s intuitive approach to imagery and sound has led him to a broad range of human interests around the world.

In recent years, Ben has been commissioned to create numerous short films, video installations and projections by MetLiveArts, Gallim Dance, Utah State University, Center for Faith & Work and All Angels’ Church (NYC). Ben has also a Lincoln City Fellow and has been the artist-in-residence at Center for Faith & Work and Grace Farms Foundation. He has received numerous awards for his documentary work about survivors of sex-trafficking in India and Africa, as well as his films about young people on the autism spectrum.

Ben also works in close collaboration with cinematographer Andrew Ellis to explore the relationship between dance and film. Past works have featured Meredith Monk, the Paul Taylor American Modern Dance Company, Andrea Miller and Gallim Dance, Sonya Tayeh, New Chamber Ballet, Bill T. Jones, Ernest Felton Baker, and Matthew Rushing of Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.

Recent projects include a permanent video installation at Utah State University's Center for Clinical Excellence, as well as a collaboration with choreographer Andrea Miller and Gallim Dance on a 10-day progressive performance and video installation about the phenomenon of the human body. This piece was commissioned by MetLiveArts and presented at the Met Breuer in May 2018.

Ben’s work has been screened by National Geographic, Lincoln Center, Cannes Short Film Corner, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Met Breuer, Brooklyn Academy of Music and has also been included into various high school and college curricula in the US and France.

Ben Stamper is a multi-disciplinary filmmaker/artist who works in a variety of genres.

His most personal work has been likened to a “spiritual mandala” by film critic Paul Schrader in his book Transcendental Style in Film (Second Edition). Ben’s video installation commissions include Dark Burn Creative (LA), The Sorenson Center for Excellence at Utah State University, The Center for Faith and Work, New York City, and Met Live Arts at the Met Brauer, NYC. Ben is a Lincoln City Fellow and has been the artist-in-residence at Center for Faith & Work and Grace Farms Foundation. Ben is a frequent collaborator with choreographer Andrea Miller and Gallim dance.

Ben is also co-founder of Helix Films along with his longtime collaborator Andrew Michael Ellis. For over ten years, they have travelled the world creating original films that blend poetry, choreography and myth.
